The crafts are manufactured by hand with traditional techniques.
While it takes a long time for artisans to acquire the skills, it’s getting harder and harder to secure and train successors of the traditional crafts due to the decline in demand for the traditional crafts.
“Traditional Artisans” are certified after passing “The Traditional Artisans Accreditation Examination” by the Association for the Promotion of Traditional Craft Industries.
Artisans are required to have at least 12 years of experience in creating traditional craft to be qualified to take the examination.
National Association for Japanese Traditional Artisans and Local Association for Japanese Traditional Artisans
Accredited Traditional Artisans must organize or sign up for the Local Association of Japanese Traditional Artisans based on “the Traditional Artisans Accreditation Implementation Guidelines,” and strive for regional promotion through activities and exchanges among Traditional Artisans.
National Association for Japanese Traditional Artisans is an organization of local traditional artisans from across the nation.
The Local Associations for Japanese Traditional Artisans are required to participate in the National Association for Japanese Traditional Artisans that succeeds and improves the traditional technique through deepening mutual bond and exchange of the information.
To sum up, Accredited Traditional Artisans are those who passed the accreditation examination implemented by a private association for promotion of the traditional crafts.
The accreditation by “the private association” means that it’s not the national qualification. Instead, it’s qualified by the Association for the Promotion of Traditional Craft Industries. There are also traditional artisans who are qualified by cities or prefectures and don’t belong to the National Association for Japanese Traditional Artisans.
